ADDRESSING ENERGY MANAGEMENT PITFALLS WITH A MANAGEMENT STANDARD

Short-term improvements in energy efficiency can be achieved simply by converting to more efficient technology. However, long-term gains in energy efficiency require the combination of both management and technology. A national energy management standard adopted in April, ANSI/MSE 2000, contains a series of elements that describe a framework to systematize energy management practice. Relevant elements in the standard include items that address planning, purchasing, monitoring and measuring, management commitment, establishing an energy team, and energy management projects. Successful implementation of this standard by an organization will address those problems associated with a lack of effective management and help improve site energy efficiency. The ultimate results of maintaining a functioning management system for energy are comprehensive and timely data on energy performance, detailed planning to improving existing operations and reacting to unexpected disruptions, and continuous improvement in energy management.
