SEFAG s Silcosil~(~R) - 20 Years of Innovative Solutions Using Silicone Composite Insulators for High Voltage Electrical Systems

SEFAG AG (Switzerland) has been a leader for over forty (40) years in the development of electrical components for distribution and transmission class, high voltage electrical systems. Specifically, their development of a composite, or non-ceramic insulator (NCI) design, using Silicone Rubber (SR) technology will be discussed in this document. Since the introduction of NCI's in the 1970's, a variety of processing technologies have been perfected that allows tailor-made solutions for suspension, tension, post and hollow core insulator designs. In addition, these designs are capable of withstanding a wide range of environmental conditions, while providing a cost-effective replacement for ceramic insulators. The paper discusses four aspects of NC! development, including frequently asked questions (FAQ's) from utility engineers, as follows: 1. SEFAG History and Development of the NCI 2.
