This paper describes the most crucial issues related to reliability in Electronic Fee Collection(EFC) systems and in Electronic Fare Management (EFM) systems. Both in EFC systems aswell as in EFM systems new technology is replacing the traditional manual payment andticketing systems. By this the new technology has improved the payment systems for thetransport services. However, the new technology has also introduced a more 'hidden'payment procedure seen from the involved parties' point of view. For each of the actorsinvolved the reliability of the system considered will have different consequences, bothconcerning economy, trust and operational costs. The different aspects seen from the differentactor's point of view are described in this paper. The paper also describes the main issuesrelated to different types of reliability requirements for different types of actors in differenttypes of system.The paper focuses on the interface between the EFC system and the User as well as theinterface between the EFM system and the Customer.
