OGS, THE TURKISH ETC SYSTEM -A RETROSPECTIVE OVERVIEW

OGS, The Turkish National ETC system will complete its 5th year of operation on June 30th2004. The system collects tolls not only on most of the Turkish motorways nationwide but alsoon two of the busiest tolling points in Europe, the ?stanbul Strait Bridges. The system is the firststep along the goal of achieving predominantly automatic and operator free nationwide tollingby the middle of 2006. In this paper the OGS system will be described and views will bepresented on lessons learnt technically and operationally. Statistics regarding tag marketpenetration and other performance criteria such as ETC transaction vs cash transactions andviolation rates are also presented.
