RANCHO SECO SECONDARY SYSTEM DISMANTLEMENT

The Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station ceased operation in June of 1989 and entered anextended period of SAFSTOR. Dismantlement of Turbine Building systems began in 1997 andis nearing completion. Approval for dismantlement was based on savings that could be realizedover the decommissioning cost estimate. Financial success has been achieved through anaggressive decontamination and survey-for-release program. High packaging efficiency hasbeen achieved for the waste sent for disposal. Hazardous materials have been a major issue.This paper describes the problems encountered and solutions found in that effort.
