FUNDAMENTALS OF COATING SYSTEMS

As originally stated, this subject is far too comprehensive to cover in a limited presentation time. All persons involved in any facet of corrosion protection via protective coatings are encouraged to seek additional technical, historical and practical data to assist in the overall task. Attendance in seminars and educational forums such as WSCS are excellent means to obtain this information and data. There are many local and national organizations which are totally dedicated to corrosion prevention, including the Steel Structures Painting Council and NACE International. There are many others which cover the specific areas of corrosion within their industries, including the American Water Works Association and the Water Environmental Foundation. Despite the findings of the National Bureau of Standards and Battelle Columbus Laboratories in their 1975 corrosion survey regarding "unavoidable costs", there is sufficient information in the "avoidable" category to propel us to greater protection methods. It is hoped this presentation will assist us in attaining that greater and total protection via effective use of protective coating systems.
