Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) systems play an important role in an integrated CAD/CAM. One of the primary aims of a process planning system for machining is to interpret the design information and prescribe appropriate machining operations consistent with the requirements set forth by the designer. Over the years, there have been considerable efforts in developing CAPP systems using various approaches. A review of the reported literature in this area is presented. A CAPP methodology based on neural network is proposed. The detailed strategy for building the neural network model including designing, training and validation of the neural network is outlined. Illustrative examples are provided. The application of the proposed methodology is believed to contribute substantially in improved performance of CAPP systems.
