摘要

Efficiently running a major nanofabrication user facility within the framework of a university research setting is a daunting task. Operational costs, staffing, training, safety, and the diversity of the research (faculty, users, and subject matter) are but a few of the challenges facing this community. This paper updates a subset of metrics (initially established for FY08) used to characterize such user facilities based on an extensive face-to-face survey of major university laboratories. Data relating to such factors as laboratory staffing, operating costs, subsidies, cost recovery, tuition, comparative tool rates, hours of use and populations are summarized and reported on in the context of determining a reasonable measure of an efficient and effective laboratory operation. The complete set of data will available (facility names redacted) to any requestor.
