Currently, there are six cities constructing their metro systems in China, among which, the Nanjingrnmetro project is characterized by its complicated and unfavourable geological conditions, such asrnvaried topography, rugged bedrocks, many faults passing through, rapid variation in lithology andrngeotechnical properties, soft ground, high groundwater table and multiple groundwater types.rnTherefore, the geological and geotechnical investigations play a vital role in the project. This paperrnintroduces the investigations carried out in the project. The division of engineering geological stratarngroups and the evaluation of rockmass by modified BQ procedure are described. The mainrngeotechnical problems in different geotechnical zones are further discussed.
