We report experimental results on a nonlinear fiber-optic receiver which uses the Raman self-frequency shift effects in optical fibers to perform intensity thresholding with femtosecond response times. The receiver exhibits a contrast ratio of 36 dB for received pulse energies of approx 1 pJ.
