Variable switched reluctance (VSR) motors are gaining acceptance as motors as well as generators. Unlike other motor types the VSR motor offers the designer many degrees of freedom. This paper will examine how the design of a VSR motor differs from the VSR generator. This paper will discuss the tradeoffs required for good performance as a 4 quadrant drive. The paper is intended as an overview rather than to focus on a specific solution or application. The paper is intended to introudce the qudience to the specific problems when designing and applying VSR motors.
