The current development of electromagnetic rotary actuators is mainly driven by automotive applications. Diverse motion profiles must be realized in harsh environments. A DC motor plus gear is the conventional solution for such tasks. Howeve,r many requirements will be met best by dedicated limited-motion rotary actuators. A novel hybrid actuator suitable for a large range of operation is presented. An actuator is designed for electronic throttle control using a lumped parameter model and finite element calculations. the resutls are verified by measurements on a prototype. The actuator meets typical requirements with respect to position control dynamics.
