Due to extremely cold conditions in the Arctic, there are far greater energy requirements on a per capita basis than anywhere else in the World. Far remote and widely dispersed communities make it much more costly to produce and distribute power. This offers significantly more opportunities in the Arctic for this fascinating emerging technology. However, there are a lot of challenges ahead. Arctic Fuel Cells Initiative (AFCI) is in a conceptual stage to promote hydrogen economy in the Arctic. The purpose is to develop greater cooperation among nations of the circumpolar world for further research, development, demonstration and installation of fuel cell and related technologies. AFCI plans to act as a catalyst to develop strategic partnerships for enhancing research and development for early adoption of these technologies.
