DC CASTING STATION EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURAL MODIFICATIONS TO ALLOW SAFE ABORTS

During direct casting (DC) operations, emergency situations require the ability to terminate the casting operation safely when the trough and filtering systems are full of metal from furnace to casting table. Safe termination includes stopping the platen and draining away the metal without putting personnel at risk. Older casting facilities often do not have the systems and equipment capable of performing a safe termination, and space is generally very limited. This paper discusses the design criteria, space and equipment constraints, and procedural changes that resulted in a successful, cost-effective retrofit to allow safe casting aborts on an older generation DC casting station.
