As one of the largest industrial consumers of energy in the world, The Dow Chemical Companyrnand its 46,000 employees have put energy efficiency at the very core of its business – both as arncost savings initiative and as a primary corporate social responsibility. Dow’s sustainedrncommitment to achieving specific short-and-long-term energy efficiency goals is accomplishedrnthrough the company’s proven Energy Efficiency and Conservation Management System.rnBy committing to comprehensive goal setting, meticulous energy measurement, tracking andrnreporting, benchmarking, continuous efficiency improvement, utilization of energy bestrnpractices, and fully engaging employees, Dow exceeded its aggressive 2005 goals to reducernoverall energy intensity by 22 percent from 1995 to 2005. Over a 10-year period, Dow savedrnmore than $4 billion, conserved over 900 trillion Btus and mitigated an estimated 51 millionrnmetric tons of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas, which is like taking more than 6.5 million carsrnoff the road for one year.rnDow is currently working toward achieving its publicly announced 2015 Sustainability Goals,rnwhich include its commitment to reducing the company’s energy intensity by 25 percent by 2015rnand greenhouse gas intensity by 2.5 percent annually over the same 10-year period. Dow’srnleadership believes that these efforts, complimented by its external advocacy efforts and industryrnleadership, will lead to industry-wide best practices while creating a better environment forrnfuture generations.rnDow’s energy efficiency and conservation initiative relies strongly on a comprehensive,rnstructured approach to resources conservation and energy intensity reduction. At the core is thernsustained commitment and support of Dow’s corporate leadership. The overall Energy Efficiencyrnand Conservation effort within Dow is driven by a Global Energy Efficiency Leader, who hasrnfull responsibility and accountability for implementing and managing an aggressive globalrnenergy conservation plan. The energy conservation leader sponsors technology center and siternenergy efficiency teams and networks throughout the company to identify energy savingrnopportunities, develop long-term energy improvement plans and to implement projects.rnDow’s energy improvement methodology makes extensive use of well-established companywidernwork processes in addition to some unique strategies to ensure successful performancernattainment.
