CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE has built several LNG Carriers. They review here their research activities in naval architecture, containment systems and more specifically propulsion. Propulsion plants which could replace traditional steam turbines are reviewed. It is concluded that most promising solution is diesel-electric propulsion plant which uses proven electric transmission systems from cruise liners and gas burning engines operated in carbureted mode proven in power plants. Operating the engines in an "ALL GAS" mode is recommended to open the way to modern and efficient technologies such as pods.
