The response of a unifrom electron gas to a localised pertubation has long been a unifying theme in condensed matter physics. Some well known responses include Friedel oscillatios, the RKKY interaction, the Kondo effect and Thomas-Fermi sereening. These resonses share the common feature of being local in the sense that the magnitude of the response generally diminishes with incresing distance from the source. Here we discuss the response of the discrete states of an electorn resonatory to a localised perturbation. Unlike the response of a uniform electron gas, the response of disscrete states does not strictly diminish with increasing distance from the perturbation and, as we demonstrate, can be made to grow and become large at distance far frm the impurity, creating a mirage-like effect. We call this response a "Quantum Mirage."
