Peeling of Poplar: Cultivars and Forest Stations Effects on Cutting Forces and Veneer Quality

In the framework of a project aiming to draw up a technological referential database concerning 10 cultivars of poplars, we have realized a first sampling of 54 trees grown in 4 types of forest stations. First, cartography of moisture content was established on one disk per tree then, for each tree, a 60cm long bolt was peeled on an industrial peeling lathe instrumented for the measurement of the cutting forces. The quality of the veneer obtained was quantified measuring the curl up, thickness variations, lathe checking and surface quality. The first results show that there is no cultivar effect for the moisture content distribution, the cutting and pressure bar forces, the curl-up frequency and the fuzziness aspect. Cultivar effects have been observed for curl-up amplitude, surface roughness and thickness variations. But all these results are to be considered with caution because the sampling is still incomplete.
