Internal erosion of the cores of embankment dams is difficult to predict. It can cause catastrophic collapse but does not necessarily do so. In modern design we rely on filter protection for added protection. Many older dams do not have this. The ways in which internal erosion can lead to failure are reviewed here, together with the assessment of the filter transitions of old dams, of the rate at which damage occurs, of the type of damage and whether it can lead to collapse and the signs by which internal erosion may be detected and monitored.
