3,3',4,4'-Biphenyl dianhydride (BPDA) based polyimides have been used as film with outstanding properties by Ube Industry Co. in Japan under the trademark of Upilex S and Upilex R. In our laboratory, a technique has been developed to synthesize BPDA from 4-Chlorophthalic anhydride. BPDA can not follow the procedure for the preparation of PMR-15 matrix resin because of the precipitation of the components in alcoholic solvents. Recently we have developed a technique to prepare the BPDA based matrix resin involving esterification of BPDA in alcohol, removal of the alcohol, mixing the components, e. g. diester of brphenyhetracarboxylic acid (BPDE), 4,4'-methylene-dianiline (MDA) and monomethyl ester of 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (NE) in an etheral solvent, then heating to afford the matrix resin solution.
