摘要

This paper is based on the findings of the detailed evaluation of a recently completed environmental learning center. EarthConnection is a 3800 square foot passive and active solar, super-insulated environmental learning center located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The building houses a 900 square foot meeting space, library, small store, offices and kitchen, was designed to embody the mission of the organization, and intended to provide an example to architects, builders, homeowners and renters of resource-efficient design and construction. A set of goals based on principles of sustainable design was developed for use in the design decision-making process. These goals stated that the building should (1) be "earth connected," meaning that the building systems parallel the natural systems as closely as possible, (2) employ resource-efficient energy systems and construction materials, (3) be economical to build and maintain, (4) be accessible to all, and (5) create opportunities for experiential learning. This paper presents a brief description of this light commercial building, and focuses in particular on the design of the energy systems and the selection of materials. Energy systems include passive solar and ventilation strategies, solar thermal, active annual heat storage, photovoltaics, and water conservation/recycling features. These systems are described and performance projections are summarized. The materials include a mixed species timber frame, engineered wood products, seven types of insulation, glazing, fiber cement cladding, asphalt shingles and various recycled and/or environmentally friendly interior materials and finishes. These are evaluated in terms of application, specifications, environmental impacts associated with manufacture, embodied energy, life span, recyclability, indoor air quality and regional availability.
