EAST/WEST COLLABORATIVE DIGITAL DESIGN PROJECT: THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF IMAGE

This international collaborative digital design project demonstrates a joint commitment by three collaborators from separate geographic locations to work together to develop an educational exhibition that combines overlapping interests in art, design, ancient Chinese artifacts, fabric design and technology The initial creative process began for all participants with a diverse grouping of ancient Chinese artifacts that were the collective inspirational sources for the final aesthetic imagery. This initial phase progressed into diverse directions as each collaborator customized distinct design development techniques that integrated their unique traditional skills with technology. Numerous obstacles in collaborative communication (English and Chinese) during the group development phases of this project were overcome via the universal language of imagery. The resultant opening series of exhibitions (and Web exhibition http: //www. cadtextiledesign. com) titled Inspirational Chinese Designs: East West Interpretations, includes 90 pieces (consisting of framed fabric posters, fabric scarves, and fabric yardage).
