A STUDY ON THE APPLICATION OF MULBERRY RED PIGMENT FOR SILK FABRICS

Mulberry is the mature fruit of mulberry tree. It contains plenty of nourishing substance such as dextrose, vitamin, microelement, but also plenty of red pigment. Its color may be altered from cardinal red to black blue when the range of pH from 3. 5 to 13. In this paper, the mulberry red pigment as a natural dye is used to colorate silk fabrics. The extraction technique, stability, and dyeing capability of the mulberry red pigment have been studied, and the capability of preventing UV-radiation of the dyed fabrics have been also tested. The results indicate that the mulberry red pigment has a very well dyeing capability, and the optimal dyeing condition is pH for 4, temperature for about 90℃. The fabrics dyed with mordant, have a higher values in K/S and lower values in brightness L~*, chroma values a~* of red and green, chroma values b~* of yellow and blue, and also a little decreasing value in c~*. It is proved that the fabric dyed with mulberry red pigment possessing very good capability of preventing UV- radiation. In the whole UV wavelength band from 200 to 400 nm, the permeation ratio of UV is 2.3%～5.1%, and it could be declined to 1.9%～3.2% if the mordant is appropriate.
