As the 1990s arrived, there were many models of ice segregation, but they all suffered from the common fault of little or no experimental verification. Research efforts became focused on experimental evaluation of multiple hypotheses used in these models and significant progress was made toward quantitative understanding of ice segregation in the past decade. As our knowledge advanced, research results became more mathematically oriented and less accessible to engineers. The objective of this paper is to present the current knowledge of ice lens growth with minimum number of equations and to explore practical ways to mitigate ice lens formation.
