摘要

Two types of GaAs-based photonic crystal air-rod slabs were fabricated by periodically perforating a conventional waveguide and a membrane suspended in air, respectively. Their optical properties such as transmittance spectrum were experimentally studied in relation to the photonic band structures. For the latter, in particular, the guided modes are found to exist. Both types of slabs are concluded to be suited for controlling the radiation field and light propagation, although for the former, only those with an air-filling factor smaller than typically 0.30 should be used. Furthermore, it is found that the group velocity directly measured for a relatively-flat band of one of the above samples is as small as 0.03_c, c being the light velocity in vacuum.
