1 State of the art numerical tools are able to predict correctly the dynamic mooring line tensions of semi‐submersible in most environmental conditions, including severe seastates.rn2 Calibration/validation of the numerical models based on model test data is needed.rn3 However, present advanced numerical tools may significantly underestimate extreme mooring line tensions induced by very large wave groups with long periods.rn4 It was concluded that wave frequency surge and heave motions are underestimated in very large waves, which results on underestimation of mooring line tensions.rn5 It was concluded that wave frequency viscous forces in surge need to be considered for "large volume" semi‐submersibles in very large waves.rn6 Simple numerical procedures applied for the present investigation may give guidance on how to update present numerical tools.
