Malaria: Impact of a Tropical Disease on an Oil Company in a Sub-Saharan Country

During the three months of September through November2005, approximately 1,100 cases of malaria that werediagnosed and treated in the medical facilities of an oilcompany in Nigeria were collected and analyzed to clarify theeconomic impact to the business unit. Additionally, gaps andchallenges were identified to adopt strategies to mitigate theimpact of this tropical disease. Based on this information, theprimary initiative has been to establish more effective malarialpreventative measures to mitigate potential fatalities of thisdisease in the future.
