Solid-State Laser Applications for UXO and Landmine Clearance

The new higher-powered laser demonstrated that ordnance items, such as artillery rounds that could not be neutralized with the lower powered device, could be neutralized. However, additional tests to determine the ranges to be used have yet to be determined. A view of the neutralization of a 155 mm artillery rounds is shown in Figure 4. The new system should meet the weight specifications for the uparmored HMMWV and will be capable of being stored at freezing temperatures. It is anticipated that the fiber laser should reduce the potential for dust on the optics, because it is easier to seal the optical train and there are fewer optical components.
