High Power Doped Phosphate Glass Fiber Laser Development

Highly-doped, high gain phosphate glasses offer the potential to develop short-length, high brightness fiber laser modules at Yb and Er emission wavelengths. Compared to long-length fiber lasers, short-length fiber lasers have advantages of extremely compact sizes for device integration, reduced nonlinear optical effects for high power cw or pulsed output, and potentially single-longitudinal-mode operation due to increased longitudinal mode separation. Single-frequency emission would enable phase-locking of a large number of compact fiber laser modules as well as simultaneous seeding of phase-correlated high power fiber amplifiers. To realize this power-scalable approach we develop 5-10 W cladding pumped fiber laser modules aiming at single-transverse-mode and single frequency operation.
