The object of this study is to provide design guidance to minimise the temperature of Building Integrated PV Systems, thereby increasing the electrical output. Measurements have shown that PV systems fully integrated into a building operates at about 50oCe above ambient temperature during sunny days in parts of Europe. This represents a loss of performance of up to 10% of power produced, compared to STC. This also increases the thermal cycling stresses and ageing processes, which are significant for those interested in the return on investment. The PV Cool Build work has demonstrated that with better design, these systems can reduce the rise in operational temperatures by up to 20%. Theoretical modelling has been carried out from fundamental principles. A design tool based on the European meteorological data in Excel format has been developed to help designers of Building Integrated PV systems. The innovative aspect of the project is to turn a scientific tool into an easily operated design tool for non-specialist building designers.
