Design and construction of the Down Town Project stage 1 (DTL1P) presents a large number ofrngeotechnical and engineering challenges. It comprises seven stations and associated connecting cut and coverrnand bored tunnels in the heart of urban Singapore. These challenges are driven by the variable ground, rangingrnfrom very strong sedimentary deposits to recently reclaimed very soft Marine Clay. To ensure a successfulrnproject a structured risk approach was employed to identify hazards and put in place engineering solutions tornenable work to proceed safely and with minimal impact to the surrounding public. A number of different andrnnovel design approaches were utilised across the contracts several of them are reviewed.
