Design and construction of the Down Town Project stage 1 (DTL1P) presents a large number of geotechnical and engineering challenges. It comprises seven stations and associated connecting cut and cover and bored tunnels in the heart of urban Singapore. These challenges are driven by the variable ground, ranging from very strong sedimentary deposits to recently reclaimed very soft Marine Clay. To ensure a successful project a structured risk approach was employed to identify hazards and put in place engineering solutions to enable work to proceed safely and with minimal impact to the surrounding public. A number of different and novel design approaches were utilised across the contracts several of them are reviewed.
