These results indicate that a fluorogenic substrate can be covalently bound to a polymer and applied to study proteolytic activity, particularly its spatial localization within hydrogel materials seeded with cells. We believe that this system will provide us with a powerful tool to visualize proteolytic activity, track cell migration, and understand the mechanisms of cell migration on various materials.
