The Netherlands did not take part in World War I. At the outbreak of the conflict the country mobilized its armed forces and declared itself neutral. This armed neutrality came under threat several times, but on balance the belligerents on the West front kept the Netherlands out of the war. This, however, does not mean that the Great War passed the Netherlands by, on the contrary. The more scientific research into the four mobilization years and the years in between the two world wars is becoming available, the more it is beginning to emerge how important this war has been for the military position of the Netherlands within Europe.
