The remarkable physical, chemical and electrical properties of diamond are of high benefit for the fabrication of radiation detectors for specific applications which are hardly covered by standard semiconductor detectors. These include the operation in hostile environments such as that encountered in nuclear industry and high energy physics, as well as low absorption cross section or fast detectors for physics experiments. The current extension of the potential applications of diamond detectors were closely linked to the rapid improvement in the material electronic quality. The recent progresses made at LETI on diamond material grown by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition are presented here, together with some original applications concerning radiation hard charged particle counters and gamma meters; soft X-ray beam monitors and fast photodetectors.
