This paper describes the application of potassium permanganate at a site impacted with TCE and the initial observed effects on the subsurface aerobic and anaerobic microbial populations. In order to determine the effect of permanganate on subsurface microbial populations, soil and groundwater samples were collected from a site prior to, during, and after the application of potassium permanganate. The microbial populations in the soil and groundwater at each stage of the chemical oxidation process were examined. The general classes of microbial populations that are typically examined during a natural attenuation evaluation were measured. These included aerobic heterotrophs, anaerobic heterotrophs, iron reducing, nitrate reducing, sulfate reducing and methanogenic microbial populations. The objective of this test was to measure the effect of potassium permanganate (KMNO_4) on microbial viability and the potential for recovery.
