We report a new wide viewing angle VA mode LCD with a simpler process of cell fabrication. Of the glass pair forming the cell, the plate with common electrode is rubbed and the other with pixel electrodes is slit patterned and not rubbed. The pattern induces a component of electric field in the lateral direction and the liquid crystal molecules in the cell change their directions slowly and continuously not forming any disinclination lines. This cell has viewing angle greater than 140 degrees, the response time about 25 ms, and the transmittance for normal incidence 80% of that of a single domain cell.
