A ternary Zn_(1-x)Mg_xS:Tb,F thin film has been prepared as a new green emitting phosphor by an rf-magnetron sputtering system. The multi-layer structure consisting of Zn_(1-x)Mg_xS:Tb,F and ZnS:Mn was analyzed in terms of color variation and compared with recent new structure of Zn_(1-x)Mg_xS:Mn/ZnS:Mn stacked phosphor layers. Electroluminescence measurements showed that the light emission corresponding to ~5D_4 → ~7F_6, ~7F_5 transitions in blue and green regions rather contributed to improve the color coordinates of the green component without deteriorating the efficiency of emission in the multicolor EL devices with filtered approach. We conclude that Zn_(1-x)Mg_xS:Tb,F is a promising candidate for the green emitting phosphor layer instead of not only Zn_(1-x)Mg_xS:Mn but also ZnS:Tb,F.
