In order to raise the processing quality of the larger workpieces, a new line scanning selective laser sintering rapid prototyping (SLS RP) technology is introduced. The output beam of CO_2 laser is changed into a linear beam by cylindrical lenses, and the line length within the working plane may be varied from the maximum length to a spot by a zooming unit during scanning. The width of the laser line is 0.14 mm and the variable range of the line length is 0.14~40 mm. Laser power density is identical for different line length and is sufficient to sinter the various organic powder materials at 30 mm/s scanning speed. For larger workpieces, the quality of the new line scanning processing is better than that of the vibrating mirror spot scanning processing, so the application region of SLS RP technology may be expanded greatly.
