The high production costs of metal matrix composites (MMCs) sustain the effort of increasing the use of near-net shape technologies. The need of obtaining stuctural components showing improved properties with respect to the semifinished products (billets or ingots) imposes not only the choice of th eproper manufacturing technology but, also, the selection of the optimised processing parameters in order to acquire a refined material microstructure without defects like microcracks. Among hot deformation processes, attractive for their relatively low cost, forging is particularly difficult to optimise because of the occurrence of tensile stresses responsible for reinforcement particle breaking and void nucleation at the reinforcement/matrix interface.
