Traditional steel pipe sheet pile joints present constructional, structural and environmental problems; a new H-joint is proposed to alleviate these problems. It is developed from a simple idea in which two steel pipe piles are connected by welding H-steel section on them. The remedial characteristics of the H-joint are detailed. Centrifugal model tests were done on rectangular H-joint and P-P joint steel pipe sheet pile model foundations to grasp the mechanical and deformation behavior of the respective foundations under lateral loading. It is observed that the H-joint improves the joint efficiency and increases the lateral bearing capacity of steel pipe sheet pile foundations by 40%. The H-joint foundation deforms less than the P-P joint under the same applied lateral load.
