It is well known that the seismic response of soil affects the structural response significantly which is commonly known as the soil-structure interaction (SSI) effect. However, how soil response alters the SSI behavior in case of the frozen ground has not been studied critically. This thesis provides a comprehensive study on the investigation of frozen soils effects on the ground motion characteristics and SSI effect. The study uses one-dimensional seismic wave propagation through the soil to study the soil response for both frozen and unfrozen conditions. The effects of frozen ground on lateral behavior of concrete-filled steel pipe pile is also investigated by using finite element method. The results show that the presence of frozen soils significantly changes the ground motion characteristics and lateral behavior of pile foundation. This thesis also provides a recommendation for the structural design in cold regions which accounts for the frozen soils effects.
