Regulating the pressure is an important concern for gas network operators of Gaz de France who are faced with overpressure generated by sudden closing of valves downstream of pressure regulating stations. The overpressure level depends on many parameters such as flow rate, inlet and outlet pressure levels in stable conditions, the downstream volume size, duration for closing the valve... An analytical model model has been developed under ALLAN. Simulation environmert to establish the relative influence of these parameters. The model simulates the mass transfer in between the different components of a pilot controlled gas pressure regulator. The simulation results are compared with experimental data, the calculations simulates the main features of the regulator behaviour, and it turned out from measurments and simulations that initial flow rates and downstream volume are especially sensitive parameters.
