Most of the Hydro Power Stations especially the run-of-the river schemes fed by perennial rivers originating from Himalayas are plagued by the enormous amount of silt carried by the river waters especially during monsoon season. It is not only the quantity of silt measured in terms of PPM, some times as high as 10,000 PPM, but the adrasive nature of the silt containing high percentage of quartz particles measuring a hardness of 7 on Mohr's scale that cause extensive damage to Hydromechanical components.
