Cost effective color solutions are being developed for applications that are reaching into the consumer area. This paper will review the present state of color sensing and how semiconductor integration is enabling these cost effective color solutions. The discussion will start with the basics of color sensing and the unique considerations that need to be understood for color sensing designs. Applications for color sensing and detection have broadened considerably partially due to cost effective color sensors being developed. At one time, color-sensing implementations were limited to instrumentation or scientific-type of applications due to cost and complexity. Today, with the advent of solid-state white light sources, multi-processors and DSPs, high-speed A-to-D converters, and color sensors, applications are being found in the consumer market. We will briefly look at a portable battery color sensing application and how it could be implemented for the consumer market. In the final part of the paper, the discussion will be on how low-cost color sensors may help resolve the issues associated with color translation between different media and hardware. These low-cost color sensors will be the catalyst for color verification and correlation systems. This paper hopes to lead the discussion into the next generation of e-commerce solutions, which could include color sensing.
