WHO and UNAIDS have estimated that by the end of 1998,33.4 million people will be living with HIV/AIDS and a total of 13.9 million adults and children will have died because of HIV/AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic.The situation is vergy serious in Africa,South Asia and Latin America,but in North America and Western Europe the number of new HIV infections has remained relatively constant over the past 10 years,and the overall mortality from AIDS continues to reduce significantly for new combinations of anti-HIV drugs.
