This combined field and laboratory study has demonstrated the passive sampling ability of SPME fibres for the HCHs. Moreover, we have obtained comparable results with chlorobenzenes and DDT and can assume that time-weighted average sampling with SPME fibres works also with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and poly-chlorinated biphenyls (at least with the more volatile constituents of these substance classes). One must consider that we used the commercial SPME fibre assemblies unmodified. By a simple modification of a manual fibre holder the diffusion path length can be changed to adjust the sampler performance to different concentration levels and sampling times [LORD & PAWLISZYN, 2000]. SPME fibres provide a flexible, cheap and labour-saving passive air sampling tool, especially compared to the SPMDs. However, more detailed investigations with SPME fibres, both in the laboratory and in the field, are necessary to determine the influence of different environmental and substance-specific parameters on the passive sampling process. For example, the dependence of linear uptake rates of SVOCs on air temperature, relative humidity and on analytes concentration level have to be studied.
