Glasses are difficult to be machined for their high hardness and extreme brittleness. Mirror finishing of glasses is a challenging research topic for single point diamond turning. In this work, experimental investigations were conducted in order to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the wear of diamond tools under different cutting conditions, i.e. conventional turning and ultrasonic vibration assisted cutting. Cutting tests were performed on a two axis ultra-precision diamond turning machine. The characteristics of the machined surfaces were examined using an AFM and a white light interferometer. The tool wear mechanism was discussed on the basis of the observation of wear zone and machined surface topography. The response of the workpiece material was discussed.
