An Analysis of the Difference Threshold of Driver's Visual Senses and Bodily Sensations on a Simulator

In order to evaluate a driver's maneuvering feeling on a driving simulator, the response between a visual sense and a bodily sensation of a driver should be examined. We used a semi-driving simulator using a reconstructed vehicle. Front view scenery was taken by CCD camera and its image was projected onto the screen set on the hood. The projected image was made with a time delay by a special image delay device. So the visual stimulus of the driver was given later than bodily sensation in real time. By analyzing a standard deviation of heart rate, steering angle and questionnaire, we found that the driver perceived differential threshold of sensation at the delays of 0.4 to 0.6 seconds between them.
