The Northumberland Strait Bridge Project which was completed in May 1997, is a 12.9 km long concrete bridge located on the East Coast of Canada. A 100 year design life and exposure to a severe chloride containing and partly very cold climate, placed a very high demand on concrete quality and performance. One design aspect that required special attention was the need to reduce the risk of corrosion of the embedded reinforcing and post-tensioning steels, the strategy for which is presented in the present paper. In addition of producing a concrete with high resistance against chloride penetration and high electrical resistivity, a number of other specific measures were taken. In combination with a management and operation system for regular surveying and preventive maintenance, a design life of at least 100 years should be achieved.
